Product Carbon Footprint

Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone. We at Heubach are aware that the production of pigments and pigment preparations is particularly energy intensive. We see it as our responsibility to reduce our emissions as much as possible.

We work continuously on production and process technology and innovations to reduce our use of energy and resources while lowering our emissions.

You can’t improve what you don’t measure: in 2022 we started our journey to carbon neutrality by generating transparency on Heubach’s environmental impact.

The Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) is an established method for determining the climate impact of a product. It sums up all greenhouse gas emissions generated by a product over the different stages of its life cycle.

Since March 2023 Heubach offers Product carbon footprint for group of 13 Azo pigments. Our Product Carbon Footprints are calculated according to Green House Gas Protocol (GHG), ISO Norm (ISO 14067), Together for Sustainability (TfS) PCF Guideline and provide transparency on emissions from scope 1, 2 and 3. The product carbon footprint calculation is based on GHG emissions from our plant, purchased energy and high-quality average data for purchased raw materials and transportations.

The carbon footprints for Heubach’s Group of Azo Pigments are calculated according to the cradle-to-gate boundary system, i.e. covering the greenhouse gases emitted during production processes and material acquisition. The calculation of other environmental impacts (i.e., anything that happens after the products leave our factory gates) is beyond the scope of the calculation.

The results are unique and based on the assumptions and practices of Heubach Group. They do not serve as a basis for comparison with other companies and/or products.

High color strength products

Many of our products make an important contribution to resource conservation. They significantly extend the life of materials or exterior structures. Paints and coatings last longer if they contain stable and high-quality pigments. Using our high color strength products helps to reduce material use and energy.

Safe products

The safe handling of our pigments and pigment preparations is always our top priority. We comply with all national and international rules, laws and regulations, and in some cases even go beyond them. We aim to consistently minimize any risks to the environment and public health and ensure that clear sustainability perspectives are embedded in our product development.

Colorants for Biodegradable Polymers

The demand for biodegradable and compostable plastics is growing significantly. The coloration of biodegradable polymers – such as PLA, PHA/PBS and PBAT – requires a careful selection of pigments that must comply with strict environmental standards. Our range of organic pigments complies with EN 13432 when not used above the maximum concentration in the final plastic application.

Offering optimized recycling solutions for black plastics

The majority of conventional black plastics is colored with carbon black colorants and detectors with Near-Infrared (NIR) technology are responsible for the sorting of polymers. Reliable sorting is only possible, if the energy received by the plastic can be reflected. Carbon black pigments do not reflect in the NIR sorting devices, thus black polymers cannot be identified and sorted via this method. Heubach‘s black colorants allow the identification of the polymer by the NIR sorting devices. Thus offering a solution for recycling black plastic.

Sustainable Process Innovation

We continuously improve our production processes to save resources and to improve our environmental footprint. One example is the introduction of a vacuum filling technology that allows to reduce packaging by 50%. This leads to a minimized use of paper bags, less storage space, less waste, reduced transportation and therewith a reduction of CO2 emissions.
